Blog: One Math Problem, Many Solutions

Many math problems can be solved in several different ways (for example, there are many ways to compute the area of a circle or prove the pythagorean theorem). Create a book/blog where you discuss such problems, explore why multiple solutions exist to that problem (is it just by coincidence that the 3 different methods work, or is there a deep relationship between the two approaches?).

Why?

  • Allows for exploration of a lot of beautiful mathematical problems and solutions.
  • Emphasises the creative nature of math.
  • Helps develop a deeper understanding of the techniques and why they work.

I imagine that such a blog would generally focus on problems that are accessible to the high schooler (since that audience is more likely to be interested) but idk could cover harder deeper math problems too.

Related resources: Mathematical Circles (book), Brilliant.org daily challenges.

Progress so far: Preliminary survey of related existing work & of target audience’s interest
Source of Idea:
I ran a problem-solving programme at my high school, where we tried to curate problems that one could solve using many different ways (since that encouraged creativity, which is often missing in high school math curricula), but we weren’t able to find a good database of problems to choose from.
